Surgical Technology


San Juan College offers a Surgical Technology Program leading to an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree or Certificate.  This program provides the student with the necessary knowledge and skills to enter the profession of Surgical Technologist or commonly called a Scrub Tech.  Students who complete all program requirements are eligible to sit for national certification examination.

Surgical Technology Profession

Numerous employment opportunities for graduates exist in varied health settings including hospital operating rooms, surgery centers, veterinary hospitals, hospital central sterile, etc.  According to the U.S. Department of Labor's 2008-09 Occupational Outlook Handbook, there were approximately 86,000 surgical technologist jobs in the United States in 2006.  Due to the expected increase in the number of surgical procedures, job opportunities in surgical technology is expected to grow faster than average well into the future.  The median annual income of these individuals in 2006 was $36,080, with the middle 50% earning between $30,300 and $43,560 annually.

Program Facilities

San Juan College's Surgical Technology Program is located in the Health Sciences Center.  A dedicated classroom, central sterile processing and operating room lab serve students and is equipped with over five hundred instruments and state-of-art surgery equipment.
