Finding Literary Criticism

Getting literary criticism of a work can sometimes be the hardest part of literary research, but it's not impossible.  The first thing you want to do when looking for actual literary criticism is make sure you are only looking in scholarly journals.  This can be easily done by either going to a database that only has scholarly works such as JSTOR, or you can search a more general database such as Proquest or Expanded Academic ASAP (Infotrac) and just make sure that you select "Scholarly journals, including peer-reviewed" or "peer-reviewed publications," which is usually an option just below the search box, as seen in the example below:

Of course, thinking of key words can also be a challenge.  It's always worth a try to search for the work itself (search for exact titles using quotation marks).  If that fails, try the author.  It's also a good idea to think of subject terms and themes that you want to discuss.  The reference librarians (libraryref@sanjuancollege.edu) are always glad to help with this!
