Gale Literary Criticism

TCLC book

One set of books that is particularly helpful is our Gale Literary Criticism series (there is also Drama, Poetry, and Short Story Criticism). These have their own location in the library, and the librarians are more than happy to help you with them.  Below is an example of how to cite these articles:

Roberts, Sheila. “A Confined World: A Rereading of Pauline Smith.” World Literature Written in English     24 (1984): 32-38. Rpt. in Twentieth-Century Literary Criticism.  Ed. Dennis Poupard.  Vol.  25.  Detroit: Gale, 1988. 399-402

What books will help you and where they are in the library will depend on what health topic you are looking up.  However, most of our health books have a Library of Congress call number that begins with the letter R.  You will need to search the catalog using as many terms you can think of that relate to the health topic you are interested in.  As with any type of resource, always make sure the book was authored and published by a reliable source.

A very helpful series dealing with many health conditions as well as other health topics is the Health Reference Series.  There are too many titles in this series to list here, but there is a helpful index:

A contents guide to the Health reference series : 109 volumes  R131 .C76 2002

Nursing and Other Allied Health Professions

The SJC Library is organized according to the Library of Congress classification system. In this system, the broad subject category for "Medicine" is classed in the "R" section of the library. This means that call numbers on books in this category will begin with the letter "R". Nursing resources are classed in "RT". An example of a book title and call number in this area might be: Medical-Surgical Nursing RT 41 .L87 2005

Use the Library Catalog online to search for books in the SJC Library. The catalog will provide you with call numbers to locate the books in our collection.

If you are unable to find a particular title in our library collection, you might consider using our InterLibrary Loan Services.

Philosophy

Books and other print resources remain an important source for Philosophy related reading, information and scholarship.

Biography

Individual biographies can be found by typing the person's name last name first into the search box and then clicking on the Subject search button.  For example, to find biographical information about author, Martin Luther King, you would type King, Martin Luther and then click the Subject search button.  (If you click the Author search button you will get a list of books which he has written, not books about him.)

The SJC Library does not have individual biographies about every famous person in the world; however, there are collective biographical resources which cover a wide range of well-known people.  If you were to type your person's name into the online catalog, it would not lead you to these sources.  The following is a list which might be helpful in locating these resources...
