Gather the Currents
March 18 - April 8, 2011
Reception: 6-8 p.m., Friday, March 18
Feel the movement and color through the paintings and sculptures of Peggy Cloy, as the San Juan College Henderson Fine Arts Gallery presents Gather the Currents, March 18 through April 8. The exhibit will open with a reception, Friday, March 18 from 6 to 8 p.m.
Her landscapes are as beautiful as the southwestern mountains in Colorado where she resides. Embracing her work, she sees art as, “a complete approach to life rather than an afterthought or product. It is, for me, a practice, a process of living, a living being.”
Cloy’s paint media include acrylic, oil, oil pastel and pastel, which she feels represents the individual internal spirit and its personal connection to the earth in its own innate complexity of beauty and power.
Materials used in her sculpture pieces vary, and include hand cast paper, acrylic paint, wood, ceramic, papier-mâché and cotton linters. They range in size and perception from small and delicate to fairly monumental. They are strong statements of form and movement with complex color and texture woven into the surfaces and centers. The overall sense of Cloy’s pieces is one of powerful vitality.
Her art also includes the use of charcoal, pencil, acrylic, pastel and mixed media, including printmaking.
Throughout her career, she has exhibited her work alongside Dale Chihuly, Charles Breed, Karen Gallup, Nancy Crisp, Neda Al Hilali and Robert Rauschenberg. For more than 40 years, she has also shared her talent with others, teaching private lessons and small classes. She and her husband Lee own and operate Willowtail Springs, a vacation retreat located in Mancos, Colo., where she paints, and her work can be enjoyed in the couple’s Treehouse Gallery.
The SJC Art Gallery is open Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For further information about this exhibit or other Gallery events, contact Cindy McNealy at 505-566-3464 or email@example.com.
