Curt Stafford Art Show
March 31, 2011 - April 29, 2011
Reception: Thursday, March 31 – 3 to 5 p.m.
You’ll feel drawn into the serenity and peace of nature with the paintings of Curt Stafford in an exhibit titled The Mountain Series, at the San Juan College Humanities Gallery, March 31 – April 29. An opening reception will be held Thursday, March 31, from 3 to 5 p.m.
Please note the exhibit will open one week later than its originally scheduled date of March 24.
The beautiful array of oil landscape paintings were chosen from a series of scenes from the San Juan Mountains north of Durango en route to Ouray, Colo. Stafford’s work also represents views of Vallecito Lake, Colo., near his summer home.
“After visually surveying an area, I create my work in-studio from sketches I’ve drawn and digital photos I’ve taken when visiting the various sites,” Stafford explains. “The paintings are created by applying an under paint usually in burnt sienna or raw umber.”
“The drawings are completed with a brush only, using broad loose strokes,” he continues. “The subject of the painting is ‘roughed in’ with shades of values to create the scene before paint is applied to a dry canvas.”
The technique creates realistic paintings with some impressionism, as well as a warm, soft look, accomplished from his skillful use of color and composition. Stafford’s objective is to entertain the audience, “like music for the eyes,” he says. He credits his renewed interest in his art to Bill Hatch, professor of art at San Juan College.
The SJC Humanities Art Gallery is located in the Humanities balcony in the West Classroom Complex. It is open Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For further information about this exhibit or other Gallery events, contact Cindy McNealy at 505-566-3464 or email@example.com.
