Presidential Profile

The President is the Chief Executive Officer of the College. The President is charged in the Community College Act, in the rules and regulations of the New Mexico Commission on Higher Education, and in the policies of the San Juan College Board with carrying out the policies of the Board and with administering the College efficiently and effectively. The President is directly responsible to the Board for the operation of the College and is expected to provide overall leadership in the achievement of the mission and strategic goals of the College, as adopted by the Board. The Board consists of seven elected Trustees.

Responsibilities:

  • Reporting to an elected seven-member Board of Trustees and being the top educational administrator the college campus, two outlying campuses, and several off-site college facilities.
  • Collaborative leadership with the Board of Trustees which promote positive Board relations, support clear delineation between roles of the Board and the administration, and implementation of Board policy.
  • Develop and periodically review and revise recommendations to the Board for comprehensive, long-range plans for the development of the College, setting forth mission, strategic goals, and programs of study, resources, and facilities.
  • Submit an annual budget to the Board and make recommendations to the Board for budget changes.
  • Coordinate with executive staff and the faculty to provide high quality education opportunities for students which are accessible, comprehensive, flexible, and meet the needs of the students, the institution, and the people and employers in San Juan County.
  • Provide leadership in the recruitment and selection of appropriate faculty, professional, and support staff personnel as needed to implement the mission of the College.
  • Soliciting major gifts, raising funds from special constituencies, and obtaining corporate support from local industry to strengthen the financial future of San Juan College.
  • In cooperation with the Board, the president shall represent the College to students, and the general public, media, and community organizations.
  • Develop and implement administrative policies and procedures consistent with Board policies and applicable laws, as appropriate for effective operation of the College.
  • Represent the College in its dealings with governmental and regulatory agencies and be responsible for the formation of all reports required by local, state, and federal agencies.
  • Advocate on behalf of the college with local, state and national elected officials, agencies, and organization that may impact or influence the college’s programs and resources (public school districts, NM Commission on Higher Education, and NM Legislature).
  • Assist in the development of local, state, and national policies that are supportive of the College and that serves a rural and diverse culture.
  • Conduct an effective program of public relations with a focus on the need to keep the people of San Juan County informed about San Juan College.
  • Oversight of facility expansion, program development, and entrepreneurial activities in response to diverse demographic, economic, technological, and educational needs.
  • Maintain advisory councils that are established for each of the College’s occupational programs, which are comprised of community/business entities and instructors. The councils’ function is to advise College personnel regarding the adequacy of instructional programs designed for a particular trade, craft, or occupation.
  • Provide accessibility and visibility to students, staff and the community.
  • Active involvement in the community in order to promote the value of the college’s programs and services to business, industry, civic organizations, and the general public.
  • Oversight of issues and collaborative efforts to find positive solutions to legal challenges that affect the college.
  • Develop and maintain a collaborative, participative decision making structure within the college.

Requirements:

Education: An earned Ph.D./Ed.D./doctorate/terminal degree from an accredited university is preferred.

Experience Required:

  • Demonstrable leadership skills required
  • 5-10 years of progressively responsible higher educational administrative experience
  • Demonstrable participation in community activities
  • Demonstrable cultural and ethnic sensitivity
  • Demonstrable experience and understanding of higher education budgeting
  • Demonstrable commitment to continuous quality improvement and practices that support ongoing assessment and improvement

Experience Highly Desirable:

  • Administrative experience in a community college
  • Teaching experience at a higher education institution
  • Experience in a business environment or with economic development
  • Experience with long range strategic planning
  • Experience with higher education finance and resource development
  • Experience with state political structures and legislative relationships
