Artist C.J. Attaway will exhibit an array of multimedia pieces in an exhibit titled Looking Back and Looking Forward, at the San Juan College Humanities Gallery, May 17 – June 15. An opening reception will be held Thursday, May 17, from 4 to 6 p.m.
C.J. Attaway began enjoying art as a young child. She has fond memories of her mother taking her to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, where they visited the Impressionists Hall. It was through those early experiences that she grew to love art and drawing.
At the tender age of 12, she commissioned her first drawing. “I drew a clock/desk, and my mother sent the piece to Jen Louis Roerich Co.,” she recalls. Roerich liked the drawing so much that he sent one of his watches to her, as well as payment for her work.
Attaway continued to pursue her love of art throughout high school. Later she began working as a staff artist with a mail advertising company, where she learned about printing processes and three-color overlays. In the mid-60s, she began showcasing her talents by painting holiday windows for Christmas money. While she has painted varied Christmas landscapes over the years, her first love is to create portrait and figurative paintings in various mediums.
The Humanities Art Gallery is located in the Humanities balcony in the West Classroom Complex. It is open Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For further information about this exhibit or other Gallery events, contact Cindy McNealy at 505-566-3464, or firstname.lastname@example.org.
