Waste Management has made a $10,000 contribution to the San Juan College Foundation to support an endowed scholarship for a student in the College’s Commercial Drivers License truck driving program. Waste Management presented the check to Foundation director Gayle Dean and technical and safety coordinator Lyndell Smith on April 26.
Since the early 1990s Waste Management has supported the San Juan College Foundation. The company not only has made monetary contributions to Project Read, but also accepted several thousand cubic yards of landfill at no charge as land was being cleared in preparation for construction of the planned Outdoor Learning Center on campus.
In April, John Hammer, San Juan County Landfill district manager, met with CDL instructors to communicate Waste Management’s interest in the program. Marlene Feuer, government and public affairs manager for Waste Management, cited the program’s affordability and high quality and the role that it plays in training drivers for WM trucks as reasons for the endowed scholarship.
