Henderson Fine Art Gallery
Jazz, Woman, Bird
August 8 - August 29, 2014
Reception: August 8 – 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., in the Henderson Fine Art Gallery.
Marikay Shellman will present the art exhibit Jazz, Woman, Bird from August 8 through August 29.
Jazz, Woman, Bird emerged as a title for the show while Shellman was exploring the similarities between abstract art and jazz syncopation. An article about Harriett Hemenway, initiator of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, provided Shellman with a female muse and the bird as subject matter. The show illustrates her constant endeavor for a deeper understanding of syncopation and abstraction through her lens as a female artist.
“An image appears out of my mental sketch taking on a voice of its own,” Shellman says. “Lines begin strong and stated, then become so subtle as to disappear; unique colors pop out in totally unexpected places allowing me to release control while maintaining attention to detail. My paintings are constantly challenging the balance between spontaneity and harmony.”
An opening reception for Jazz, Woman, Bird will be held August 8, from 5-7 p.m. in the Henderson Fine Arts Gallery at San Juan College. Meet the artist and enjoy refreshments. For more information, call the Art Gallery at 566-3494.
