Exit Competencies - Aviation Technology
A student graduating with an Associate of Applied Science Degree in Aviation Technology will have as a minimum the following skills:
Have a thorough understanding of Federal Aviation Regulations (FAR) applicable commercial multi-engine pilot operations Have a strong working knowledge of Mesa Airlines' procedures and call outs applicable to a first officer Understand the privileges and limitations of flight operations Understand the requirements of accident reporting to the National Traffic and Safety Bureau (NTSB) Be able to retrieve information from the Airman's Information Manual (AIM) Have strong working knowledge of Visual Flight Rules (VFR) and Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) navigation, dead reckoning, pilotage, and radio communications Procure weather reports, forecast information, and weather trends Recognize hazardous weather from the ground and in flight Read and understand FAA advisory circulars, NOTAMS, and other communications Use VOR, ADF, and ILS systems for IFR flight Have a strong working knowledge in the operation and use of transponders, radar, and radio aids Plan and file flight plans Explain and perform pertinent air traffic control procedures Use collision avoidance procedures in high-density airport operations Understand FAA requirements and regulations in air space Execute instrument approaches in all categories of flight Read and accurately interpret enroute charts and instrument approach plates Calculate weight and balance requirements for the aircraft Accurately perform computations for obstacle clearance, crosswind components, and cruise flight Conduct pre-flight and post-flight inspection of aircraft Have a thorough working knowledge of the Beechcraft 1900 aircraft systems (fuel, electrical, etc.) Have basic understanding of jet aerodynamics and flight management systems for the regional jet Possess Instrument rating, commercial license, and multi-engine ratings authorized by the FAA Successfully pass 40 hours of training in the CRJ200 jet flight training device.
