San Juan College offers a Phlebotomy Program which prepares students with entry-level competencies to practice as a phlebotomist in a variety of settings including hospitals, clinics, and physician offices. The curriculum prepares learners to perform phlebotomy procedures, specimen collection and processing. Proper specimen collection and handling is a major key in providing quality analyses used in the maintenance of health and the diagnosis and monitoring of disease and treatment.
A high school diploma or equivalent is required for admission to the program. Students admitted must be at least 18 years of age. Complete all health requirements and background check required by the clinical affiliates prior to start of MLTS 161.

Topics of Study
MLTS 160 will include theory of blood specimen collection and processing. Content areas include related body system anatomy and function, site selection, equipment and supplies, anticoagulants, specimen processing, safety, universal precautions, professionalism, ethics and review of the health care delivery system. MLTS 161 will provide the training and practice for a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and precautions including vacuum collection devices, syringes, butterfly needles, blood culture collection and capillary skin puncture on adults, children, and infants.

100 clock hours of supervised applied experience with a minimum of 100 documented blood procurements. Successful completion of MLTS 160 and MLTS 161 enables the student to sit for the national certification examination. Practice times to be arranged at selected clinical affiliates by Program Director. Pre/co-requisites High School Graduate or Equivalent and completion of MLTS 160 with a minimum grade of C. Times to be arranged. Needed to sit for national certification exam.
