Neva Ewing
Graduate | Associate of Arts
Neva Ewing began her journey at San Juan College as a first-generation college student, earning her Associate of Arts in Liberal Arts. Today, she has come full circle, serving as a sociology instructor at San Juan College while actively pursuing her doctorate in social work through the University of Kentucky.
Ewing joined San Juan College as an employee shortly after graduating, building nearly seven years of experience across multiple roles. In January 2026, she stepped into her current role as a sociology instructor, where she now teaches both in-person and online courses.
As both an alumna and educator, Ewing brings a unique and powerful perspective to the classroom. “I’ve been where my students are,” she explains. “I know what it’s like to juggle everything and wonder how you’re going to make it through.” Still a student herself, she builds strong connections with her classes by sharing in the same academic challenges.
She credits the college’s collaborative environment as a key factor in her success. “If you communicate what’s going on, people here will work with you. They’ll find a way to help you succeed.”
Ewing believes that representation and connection are central to student success. As someone who reflects the diverse backgrounds of many students she teaches, she emphasizes the importance of building relationships and not trying to navigate college alone. “Don’t exist on an island,” she advises. “Get to know people, go to events, and build those connections; they matter more than you think.”
She continues to give back by guiding students through their own journeys, showing them firsthand that their goals are achievable.
