Yorleny Maesse

Graduate | Associate of Applied Science in Dental HygieneYorleny Maesse

At just 26 years old, Yorleny Maesse balances a full and rewarding life as a dental hygienist, a wife, and the mother of 5-year-old twin girls.
As a first-generation Mexican American college student, her path to higher education carried deep personal significance. Growing up in the Farmington area, she had long heard about San Juan College’s strong reputation and its affordability made pursuing college a realistic goal. “It was always known as a good school, especially for programs like dental hygiene,” Maesse explains.

During her time at San Juan College, supportive faculty played a key role in her success. She credits her anatomy and physiology instructor, Dr. Blake, with helping her navigate one of the most challenging aspects of the program. His approachable teaching style and ability to simplify complex material gave her the confidence to succeed in courses that would become the foundation of her career.

Her decision to pursue dental hygiene was deeply personal. Inspired by her family’s experiences, particularly her father’s limited access to dental care growing up in Mexico, she was driven to make a difference. She saw dental hygiene as a way to help others take that first step toward better health.

After graduating in 2022, Maesse began working locally before making the pivotal decision to accept a position in Durango. Despite the hour-long commute each way, the move provided a supportive work environment, better pay and long-term stability. She credits San Juan College with fully preparing her for the demands of her profession.

Beyond academics, San Juan College shaped her life in meaningful and unexpected ways. Through involvement in organizations like the ENLACE and the Herencia Latina Center, she built lasting connections—including meeting her husband. What began as a college relationship grew into a partnership that now supports the life they’ve built together.
