New or First Time Non-Degree Seeking Students

A first time Non-degree seeking student is a student who has never attended any college before. (As a high school student, if you took dual credit or concurrent enrollment courses, you are considered a first time student).

Non-degree admission is intended for the student not seeking a degree or certificate at San Juan College or for students who do not meet the requirements for regular degree-seeking admission. A student who has not graduated from high school or completed a GED program may be admitted as a non-degree student, provided the student is at least 18 years of age and his/her class has graduated from high school. Courses taken as a non-degree student may be transferred to another college, taken for job improvement, or personal enrichment. No college or high school transcripts are required to be admitted as a non-degree seeking student. Please Note: Admission as a degree seeking student is required to be considered for Financial Aid or to earn any type of degree.

If you would like to change your status from Non-degree seeking to Degree seeking you must meet the requirements to be a Degree seeking student as posted in the Academic Catalog. You will also need to fill out a Student Information Update Form and change your status.

Financial Aid

To be eligible to Financial Aid, you must be a Degree seeking student.


Non-degree seeking students who wish to enroll in English, mathematics or reading courses at San Juan College are required to take the Accuplacer and satisfy the required pre-requisite course requirements for all courses. The Accuplacer is an academic evaluation tool that will specify which level of math, reading and English courses you will begin with.

To schedule an exam appointment and complete the preregistration, go to the Testing Center webpage ( ). In the blue box, click on ACCUPLACER. Take the Accuplacer on your scheduled test day/time at the SJC Testing Center, which is located in the Information Technology Center (Copper Top Building), RM 7120D. Contact the SJC Testing Center with any testing questions at (505) 566-3139.

If you are unable to come to campus for testing because you are a distance student, go to for more information.

Meet with an Academic Advisor

If you must complete the Accuplacer requirement to take any courses, you will need to meet with an advisor to go over scores and course options.

Appointments can be made by calling the Advising and Counseling Center at (505) 566 – 3526.

Get your Student ID card at the Enrollment Services Office

Your first ID card is FREE. Replacement cards are $5.00. You will use your ID card at the campus Bookstore, Library, HHPC, and to print from the campus computer labs. Note: Student ID cards are not available for Distance Learning students.

Pay your Tuition

It is your responsibility to know the tuition deadline and to pay for your classes by that date. Please check the Academic Calendar for information concerning tuition dates and deadlines. Automatic payment plans are available through the Student Payment Plan. Additionally, tuition can be paid over the internet, by phone (505) 566-3396, or in person at the Business Office. Questions?
