A variety of unique furniture with intricate inlaid patterns is what you’ll find when the San Juan College Art Gallery presents the work of Ramon Valdez in an exhibit titled Ramon Valdez, Fine Furniture, June 3 – July 1. An opening reception will be held Friday, June 3, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the Henderson Fine Arts Center Gallery.

Valdez expresses his passion for nature through his craft as a woodworker. His creations are primarily one-of-a-kind pieces that are contemporary, always drawing inspiration from nature’s graceful lines and gentle curves. Future heirlooms are created utilizing many exotic species of wood from all around the world. “I feel an intense bond with nature as I create my art, always knowing that I am merely rearranging the beauty that Mother Nature has already provided,” he says. “I am honored to give new life to the pieces of wood that I use in my creations.”

Valdez studied under Craig Vandall Stevens, a well-known marquetarian, furniture builder and teacher. He also studied furniture design with Michael C. Fortune at Anderson Ranch in Aspen, Colo. He has been featured in numerous publications, locally and nationally, and has received many awards and honors. His creations have also been shown at Shidoni Gallery in Santa Fe; as well as Artifacts Gallery and Nicole’s in Farmington.

The Art Gallery is open Monday through Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
