Dr. Joseph Pope has served on the San Juan College Board of Trustees since 2007, representing district 7.
Pope is a New Mexico native and a Farmington physician. He has practiced family medicine in Farmington since 1994. Following graduation from Goddard High School in Roswell, N.M., he served in the United States Navy as a medical corpsman from 1975 to 1979. He earned his Bachelor of Science in 1987 and his medical degree from the University of New Mexico (UNM) in 1991. He completed a family practice residency at St. Mary’s Hospital in Grand Junction, Colorado in 1994.
Pope enjoys music and has played for many years in the San Juan College Symphony Orchestra, in the Tres Rios Quartet, and in the San Juan Symphony. He plays the viola and occasionally the violin. Pope has served as Chief of Staff at San Juan Regional Medical Center and on the San Juan Independent Practitioners Association Board. He has served on the Board of Childhaven Foundation and the Farmington Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Pope is passionate about San Juan College being an accessible gateway to higher education.
He and his wife, Catherine, have one son, Stephen, a student at the University of New Mexico. Catherine is a great supporter of the arts in the community, teaching violin and performing as a vocalist and a violinist in various groups.
