Established in 2018 by SJC President Dr. Toni Hopper Pendergrass, the award commemorates Dr. Henderson’s outstanding leadership and recognizes faculty members who have achieved the highest academic rank at San Juan College. Dr. Henderson served as President of San Juan College for two decades, from 1982 to 2002, and then continued to serve in the emeritus position until his passing in March of 2020.
Dr. Pendergrass recognized this year’s recipients at the October 2023 San Juan College Board of Trustees meeting. In addition to receiving this prestigious award, the honorees also have achieved the distinguished rank of full professorship.

Those honored include Crystal Blake, Professor School of Science, Math, and Engineering; Sherri Cummins, Professor, School of Humanities; Jonathan Fisher, Professor, School of Humanities; Jennifer Lewis, Professor, School of Science, Math, and Engineering; and Dawn Myers, Professor, School of Business, Information Technology, and Social Sciences.

“The Henderson Teaching Excellence Award pays tribute to Dr. Henderson’s leadership and legacy of excellence,” says President Pendergrass. “Each of these instructors has a passion for learning, a commitment to excellence in teaching, and are dedicated to our students’ success.”
