The San Juan College E-sports club continues to grow as a space where students can build community, strengthen leadership skills and compete at a high level while preparing for careers beyond gaming.

More than just competitive video games, the SJC Suns E-sports team provides students with opportunities to develop teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills in a supportive environment.

For student Samora Sam, joining the program helped create a sense of belonging during the transition to college life.

“When I first joined, I didn’t really know anyone and felt pretty unsure about being in college,” Sam said. “E-sports gave me a place where I could actually connect with people and feel like I belonged.”

E-sports Program Builds Career and Leadership Skills

The SJC E-sports team was created with a mission to develop student success through competition and collaboration. Students participating in the program often gain experience in areas such as information technology, business, marketing, broadcasting and data analysis.

“E-sports is about much more than playing video games,” said advisor Randall Keeswood. “It prepares students for a wide range of careers and helps them build confidence.”

In addition to technical and career-focused skills, the program also encourages leadership development and personal growth.

Summer Larribas, president of the SJC E-sports team, said the club has evolved into a strong support system for many students.

“We believed that one day, the E-sports club would have a permanent space, strong competitive teams and recognition beyond campus,” Larribas said. “We believed students would grow from shy and unsure individuals into confident teammates and leaders. Today, we are seeing the beginning of that vision becoming reality.”

SJC Teams Earn Recognition at Statewide Competition

The program’s continued growth was on display at the 2026 NMSU Esports Invitational in Las Cruces, where both the Rocket League and Overwatch teams earned third-place finishes.

The success reflects the dedication of students and the increasing strength of competitive e-sports at San Juan College.

Student Kol Adams said the experience goes far beyond competition.

“It’s not just about the game,” Adams said. “It’s about the people you meet, the support you get and how much you grow because of it.”

Looking Ahead for SJC E-sports

As the program continues to expand, San Juan College hopes to increase competition opportunities, strengthen scholarship pathways and continue supporting student success academically, socially and professionally through E-sports.

Students interested in gaming, technology, leadership and teamwork can find both community and career-building opportunities through the SJC e-sports program
