Telletha Valenski reflects on the path that led to being named Kirtland Educator of the Year, she sees a personal transformation built on resilience, belief and the power of education

Telletha Valenski Kirtland Educator of the Year

A Journey Shaped by Resilience, Mentorship and Purpose

Valenski’s early school years were marked by a struggle many never knew she carried. Growing up unable to read at grade level, she often sat in classrooms filled with quiet shame, hoping no one would notice how far behind she felt. Yet even in those difficult moments, family members, teachers and encouragers offered meaningful reassurance that she could succeed. Those moments planted the first seeds of confidence.

“I became the educator I once needed,” Valenski explains. That personal commitment, to provide students with the guidance, compassion and belief she once longed for, fuels her work every day.

From Healthcare Leadership to Educational Impact

Before transitioning into higher education, Valenski spent twenty-three years at the Northern Navajo Medical Center, where she developed a passion for service and community engagement. During this time, she also earned her doctorate in leadership and bilingual studies, deepening her understanding of how language, culture and opportunity intersect to shape student success.

Feeling called to serve learners more directly, Valenski joined San Juan College West as Campus Director. For the past three and a half years, she has led a dedicated team focused on innovative student services, joyful learning environments and equitable access to education for the Kirtland community and surrounding areas.

“Receiving the Educator of the Year award is meaningful not just for me, but for the entire SJC West team,” Valenski says. “It is a reminder of how far a child can go when someone believes in them. I want every child to believe in education and in themselves.”

Valenski admits that the award came as a surprise.

“I was just doing my work, not really looking for recognition. I’m simply doing what I feel is right for the students and the Kirtland community,” she said. “But it’s still meaningful to know that someone sees the work my team and I put in each day.”

Gratitude for a Community That Believes in Education

Throughout her career, one theme has remained constant: belief. Belief in students. Belief in community. And belief in the power of education to transform lives.

Valenski expressed deep appreciation for the honor:

“To the Kirtland Chamber of Commerce and the community, thank you for believing in me, for honoring this journey, and for embracing the mission we share.”

Her recognition not only celebrates her achievements but also highlights the collective strength of the educators, staff and leaders who serve SJC each day. Their dedication is what moves the college’s mission forward and supports the success of every learner.
