Art Classes

Where does your imagination go when you think of modern jewelry? Explore the design process by creating several simple pieces of jewelry in a hands-on experience with a variety of materials including metal, paper, resin, and concrete. Think of all the materials to add to our challenges—almost anything will work. Expand your outlook on what constitutes jewelry making and jewelry materials, and get ready to be excited! Supply list available from the Community Learning Center at registration.

It’s a Tiffany themed stained-glass experience for beginning students. Glass artist John Nichols will help you choose a design and fabricate a glass panel during the class, suitable to frame. Explore design and color choices, cutting and grinding techniques, foiling and soldering processes, and finishing touches to create dazzling projects. Students are welcome to repeat the class to reinforce the beginning experience. $40 supply fee payable at registration will cover shared materials; all additional supplies will be the responsibility of the students. Now that you have stained glass skills, you can focus on specialty projects, such as building a glass kaleidoscope, a specialty jewelry box, or multi-media suncatcher with jewels, agates, or sea glass. Reinforce existing skills and develop advanced techniques with an eye to specific final projects. Whether you are just beginning or want to advance existing skills, simplify watercolor with a combination of tricks, techniques and tools including sponges, spray bottles and washes. Learn the fundamentals of good composition with the use of shapes, contrast and color to help create more interesting and entertaining paintings. MICHAEL BULLOCH was born into an artistic family in Farmington. He had a brush in his hand as soon as he could sit up, and he sold his first painting when he was four. His popular Encore classes are a venue to tap into his expertise.

Stained glass artists work in one of two ways: copper foil or lead. Design and fabricate a suncatcher or small panel using a totally different technique than taught in any other Encore classes. Beauty in glass takes many forms. Transform glass bottles and sea glass into wind chimes, mobiles and suncatchers or create small stained glass pieces suitable as gifts. Learn hand building and wheel throwing with clay as well as how to fire the pots in the kiln and glazing techniques. Students will be responsible for their own tools and clay. JESSICA POLATTY is a ceramic artist who has lived and worked out of her home studio in Aztec for the past 24 years.  She is one of the founders of the Feat of Clay Artists Co-op in Aztec, and her home studio is open for the yearly Aztec Artists’ Studio Tour every October.
