Are you one of those people who use the terms “astronomy” and “astrology” interchangeably? If you are, you’re not alone! The names sound so much alike that one could understand how someone might think they’re the same thing. How are the two similar? How are they different? Is astrology a science? Come and find out in this short course on the characteristics of both astronomy and astrology!
DAVID MAYEUX, Astronomy Assistant Professor and Planetarium Coordinator, has worked at San Juan College for 30 years. He is a lifelong lover of all things celestial and has earned experience in the field of astronomy education for over 34 years.

Every day, many tons of space dust hit the Earth’s atmosphere. Due to their small size, a good amount makes it through to our planet’s surface. The dust that survives, transformed by friction in the Earth’s atmosphere, are called micrometeorites. If you know what you are looking for, you can find them on roofs of buildings. Most micrometeorites are tiny- smaller than the period in this sentence- and most have a distinctive texture, shape, and size that makes them able to be recognized from other sediments. This class gives you background, knowledge, scientific context, processes, and lab skills to find your own micrometeorite- or stardust. Every class we will learn a bit more about these tiny gems from space with a short lesson, then start in to the lab to learn how to use the sieves, do magnetic separation, process sediment, work with stereo zoom microscopes, and identify micrometeorites under magnification. While no previous experience is necessary, participants who have a steady hand and are comfortable using optics like binoculars or microscopes - will be more able to participate in all aspects of this course.
