President’s Mission Awards

Each year, the President’s Mission Awards shine a spotlight on the people who bring the mission of San Juan College to life. From faculty and adjunct instructors to professional and support staff, these awards recognize individuals whose dedication, leadership and service create lasting impact for students and colleagues alike.

The 2025 President’s Mission Awards highlight excellence across disciplines and roles, celebrating those who go above and beyond to support student success and strengthen the college’s culture.

Faculty Award: Vaughn Lewis, Automotive Technology

Vaughn Lewis, Professor of Automotive Technology in the School of Trades and Technology, received the Faculty Award in recognition of his 14 years of service and unwavering commitment to students.

On campus, Lewis is widely regarded as a steady mentor, thoughtful leader and trusted colleague. Students benefit not only from his technical expertise but also from his guidance and encouragement. Colleagues frequently turn to him for support, knowing he is generous with his time and knowledge.

Through his teaching, leadership and service, Lewis influences more than what students learn he helps shape who they become.

Adjunct Faculty Award: Sarah Hickman, Nursing

The Adjunct Faculty Award was presented to Sarah Hickman, Nursing Content Specialist in the School of Health Sciences. Hickman has served the Nursing Department for more than 13 years as a consistent and invaluable presence.

As an adjunct instructor, Hickman brings professionalism, deep expertise and a genuine passion for nursing education into every classroom. Her steady commitment has enriched the learning environment and made a meaningful difference for students preparing to enter the healthcare field, as well as for colleagues who value her insight and reliability.

Professional Staff Award: Alicia Corbell, School of Energy

With 17 years of dedicated service, Alicia Corbell, Dean of the School of Energy, received the Professional Staff Award for her extraordinary leadership and impact.

During her more than five years as dean, Corbell has strengthened the program’s national reputation through strong industry partnerships, a values-driven culture and a steadfast commitment to workforce preparation. Equally important is the sense of family she has cultivated, one where students, faculty and staff feel supported, connected and seen.

Support Staff Award: Lizbeth Moreno, School of Health Sciences

The Support Staff Award honored Lizbeth Moreno, School Operations Coordinator in the School of Health Sciences. Known for her generosity, professionalism and problem-solving mindset, Moreno consistently looks for ways to remove barriers and support others.

Over the past two years, she has also demonstrated exceptional leadership as Co-Chair of the Support Staff Association, helping boost morale. Her efforts have led to meaningful initiatives such as the Support Staff Awards and Treat Yourself Tuesday, enhancing campus culture and appreciation.

Annabelle Friddle Outstanding Educator Award

The student-nominated Annabelle Friddle Outstanding Educator Award was presented to Katherine Elliott, Assistant Professor in the School of Business, Information Technology and Social Sciences.

Students praise Elliott for her patience, clarity and deep commitment to learning. She teaches step by step, helping students understand not just how to do the work, but why it matters. Her encouragement supports both academic growth and personal development.

The honoree receives a $2,500 cash award from the San Juan College Foundation, made possible by the generosity of the late Annabelle Friddle.

Jane & Stuart Wilson Professional Staff Award

The Jane and Stuart Wilson Professional Staff Award, presented by the San Juan College Foundation, was awarded to Rhonda Schaefer, Senior Director of Marketing and Public Relations.

With 21 years at SJC, Schaefer is known as a trusted colleague who sees what needs to be done and steps in without being asked. Her positivity, professionalism and kindness make a difference every day. The award includes a $500 stipend.

The Golden Sun Award

Chris Opperman, Fire Science Coordinator, received the Golden Sun Award, passed from the previous recipient, Harley Mike. This peer-to-peer honor recognizes individuals who exemplify leadership and excellence.

A faculty member since 2010, Opperman has prepared countless students not just for graduation, but for the realities of the firefighting profession. His influence extends far beyond the classroom as he shapes the next generation of first responders. The award includes a $300 stipend provided by supporters of the San Juan College Foundation.
