Welcome to 2023!

San Juan College President, Toni Hopper Pendergrass

As we begin the new year, I want to sincerely thank our students, employees, this community and our educational partners for making last year a success on many levels. I am so proud and honored to be a part of the San Juan College family and this generous community.

In this issue of Communicator, you will find an array of stories that speak to some of our successes. We are excited to partner with New Mexico State University’s American Indian Business Enterprise Center with an Indian Business Incubator Program grant for three years. Through our Enterprise Center and the funding from this grant, we will provide customized business incubation and technical resources to Native American-owned businesses and entrepreneurs. You can read more about this tremendous opportunity on page seven of this issue.

In addition to assisting entrepreneurs and the business community, San Juan College has partnered with Western New Mexico University (WNMU) to address the teacher shortage in our state. The TeachUp program, a coordinated effort by both schools, has exceeded our goal of 40 students for the entire year in the first semester. We are grateful for this partnership and the funding from the 2022 state legislative session to educate future teachers. Not only will TeachUp help our local area, it has potential to provide qualified educators throughout New Mexico.

Speaking of educators, San Juan College recognized several faculty with Henderson Teaching Excellence Awards at the October Board of Trustees meeting. Our faculty are more than teachers, they are mentors for our students and they are dedicated to our students’ success. Congratulations to this year’s recipients.

San Juan College was once again named a Family Friendly New Mexico business, as well as a Military Friendly® & Spouse Friendly School. We are honored with these recognitions, and they are great reminders of how the College works hard to provide the best services and educational environment to serve you. I invite you to read more about these distinctions on page four of this issue.

As we embark on this New Year, I encourage you to visit one of our campuses. San Juan College is here to serve you and assist you on your educational journey. May your New Year be filled with prosperity and success!
